1. Olkurruk Mara Masai Mara Kenya lodge
The new Olkurruk Mara Masai Mara Kenya lodge has a spectacular site high on a rocky cliff at the top of the Oloololo escarpment. There are panoramic views over the plains and the meandering Mara River far below. This location was used in the Denys Finch Hatton funeral scene in the film Out of Africa.

There are 19 thatched guest rondavel designed to create the feel of an African village. Olkurruk means pied crow in Masai, and the theme is carried through in the handmade bedspreads and rugs as well as in eye-catching leather wall hangings which depict local myths about the pied crow.
The public rooms have been simply and attractively decorated using natural local materials. There is an indoor/outdoor dining area, a cozy circular lounge with an open fire in the center, and the Out of Africa bar which has the best view of those vast distances. Beyond this bar juts a large rocky overhanging where you can pick out herds of elephant, or see a distant clutch of combies (mini-vans) perhaps crowded around a kill. In the early morning you might watch a colourful hot air balloon drifting below you.

Unfortunately, there are many places in the Masai Mara Kenya lodge where that marvelous view is obscured by vegetation. Several rondavel which would otherwise have magnificent outlooks, face bushes instead. It is however frequently windy at the edge of this escarpment and the vegetation acts as a windbreak. At this height it can be cold at night. In the rainy seasons, it is often misty with poor visibility.
The rooms are cozy and snug. They are more appealing in the evening than in the heat of the day when they seem a little dark and enclosed. There are pale reed walls, hand woven rugs on the painted floor and an unusual fabric ceiling which is gathered tent like up to the peak of the rondavel. Bathroom walls are made of rough dark timber, and there are showers with plentiful solar-heated water. Décor in the rooms is imaginative and appropriate.
It is a long haul down into the reserve, and half or even full -day game drives are more popular that the traditional shorter game drives, offered by most Masai Mara Kenya lodges in the reserve. Olkurruk operates several land cruisers for game drives, and an airstrip has recently been constructed nearby. There is 24 hour electricity and an electric security fence.
2. Mara Serena Safari Masai Mara Kenya lodge
This popular Masai Mara Kenya lodge is set high on a ridge within the reserve. It commands magnificent uninterrupted views down across the Mara plains and over two water holes. The Mara Serena's unique architecture and décor suggest a fantasy with the Masai Manyatta-rounded spaces, earth tones, natural furnishings, and tribal touches.
A swimming pool has been positioned to take advantage of the wonderful view. Well-tended luxurious flower beds line the paths to the rooms which extend in a row from the main Masai Mara Kenya lodge. There are almost 80 rooms-small, enclosed, and rather claustrophobic. They all face views but have small windows and no balcony. The rooms are brightly coloured in yellow and orange with full bathrooms ensuite. Mineral water is provided in the bedrooms each night.
The public rooms are harmoniously decorated with lights in hanging pots, spears in window treatments and tribal motifs on walls. There are some thoughtful touches such as refrigerated platters keeping the buffet fresh, complimentary champagne at breakfast, internal windows framing tropical plants, and an outdoor bird feeder near a stone seating area. The Masai Mara Kenya lodge offers a variety of special activities such as breakfast at the hippo pool, wildlife films, Masai dancing, balloon safaris and bird walks.
