The 6 October 1976 Thammasat University Massacre เหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลา, was a crackdown on student protests against Thailand's right wing military government and the return of Field Marshall Thanom Kittikachorna, a military dictator, an anti-communist and Prime Minister from 1963 to 1973. Previously, Thanom had left for exile in the United States following student and civil demands for a constitutional government that developed into the 14 October 1973 uprising. Thanom returned to become a novice monk at Wat Bowonivet, a high ranking royal wat, and resultingly it all kicked off. The students were shown to have "antogonised" the ultra right wing by performing a political play that featured a mock hanging (inspired by the murder of three demonstartors in Nakhom Pathom). The pictures of the performance were doctored by the Thai press, so that it appeared as if the students were mock hanging Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn. The military, the police and far right paramilitarists responded by storming Thammasat University's Sanam Luang (Tha Prachan) campus to break up demonstrations, killing (officially) 40 plus students. However, the real death rate is known to be far, far higher. In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, the now deposed prime minister, Samak Sundravej suggested that only one student had been killed. He mocked the interviewer as being too young to remember the events, and as she was not there she was basing her ideas on "dirty histories ...

Bangsaen today makes the races I have seen at Bira this summer and autumn look like a cake walk by comparison and the number of crashes on 'out' laps was simply amazing along with the number of do-or-die passing moves executed during practice and qualifying. Great for the spectator though, this is pure racing entertainment. With most of today's sessions being only 15 minutes in duration it was eye-opening as to just how much damage could be done in such a short space of time and every session wrapped up with cars returning to the paddock on the end of towropes or on the back of flatbeds. The safety car was certainly clocking up some mileage today. It would really appear that no one has told the drivers that the first races are actually in two days time and I cannot guess what actually goes on at the official driver briefing. The track was pretty dirty and green and it would seem no one had noticed this fact, while the rapid fall in Thai November temperatures here as the afternoon ground into teatime meant the nature of the track was changing constantly and with each session the characteristics had evolved meaning the driver had to reacclimatise themselves. Bangsaen has a fearsome reputation, treat it with complacency and it will bite you back. As with so many race circuits in the world, respect is a keyword here. Cold Palms (Northern Palms)

Windmill Palm or Trachycarpus fortunel has been known to be cold hardy for many years and have been growing in Switzerland for 100 years along Lake Lucerne.

Cabbage Palm or Sabal Palmetto - Sabal Palm and Palmetto Palm is the state tree of South Carolina and Florida. It is beloved as a landscape tree in southern states with exquisite cold-hardiness and transplanting success. Sabal palms are salt water tolerant.

Canary Island Date Palm - Phoenix canariensis or Majestic Palm. Is the most desirable palm to give a tropical look to the landscape. The trees grow about 50ft tall with leaves up to 20ft long.

Chinese Fan Palm is a slow growing palm; forms very large leaves, which will give a full-grown, tree a look of weeping. This palm can withstand below frozen weather, and can grow inside patios. You can find this palm tree along highways. This type of palm tree can grow up to 25ft tall.

Date Palm is the true date palm of North Africa. It has been planted widely in Arizona and California for yield of dates. Date palms work well in mall landscaping.

Gum Palm is cold hardy to light freezes, but will ice in weather below 20°F. The long leaves look like fern fronds, but the leaflets are inspiring shiny green in colour and stiff and sharply toothed.

European Fan Palm or European Palm. Has a large crown of blue-green fanlike leaves. This palm is considered to be one of the coldest hardy and grows outside. The plant can be relocated and will survive easy with little transplant shock when moved, even in while the summer months.

Pygmy Date Palm is a good box plant when potted indoors. Fine-leafed, small scale, single-trunked palm; grows gently up to about 5ft.

Washingtonian Palm or Mexican Fan Palm has a tall slender trunk, has a crown of large fan-shaped evergreen fronds, and can supply a very tropical appearance to the landscape.

Sago Palm is a feather leaf palm that is found along the Atlantic coast beach and is 300 years old and 12 feet tall with dignified umbrella crowns.

Phoenix Sylvester Palm or Toddy Palm is very similar to the Canary Island Palm and the edible date palm.

Zamia pumila or Coontie Palm is known as the prehistoric plant, which dominated the earth 200 million years ago and grows 3ft tall on isolate male and female plants.
