The Royal Hotel was previously known as the Rattanakosin Hotel. It sits on the corner of Sanam Luang and the main section of Ratchadamnoen Avenue, with its austere 1930s architectural style. In 2006 one General Surayud was appointed as the new Prime Minister for Thailand ...following the September coup. While serving in the armed forces in 1992 Surayud led a group of 16 soldiers into the Royal Hotel. At the time it was being used a field hospital to treat those injured in the pro democracy demonstrations that had spread from Democracy Monument earlier in the day. General Surayud openly admitted to the Thai Post (22nd June 2000) that his soldiers had beaten unarmed civilians (as shown in news reports from the BBC). Three months after the 2006 September coup, Surayud, received praise from high ranking officials ...in a 4th December speech (think about it). Surayud was described as a "good and moral man."
