Chiang Mai is a gorgeous city in the North of Thailand and the capital of the Province of the same name. It is the second biggest city in Thailand and it is very popular among expats who live in Thailand. According to many of them this northern city has most of the attractions of Bangkok without the bad sides of the big city like Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.
Chiang Mai is also the most culturally significant city in the northern Thailand, famous for its Lanna culture. The city used to be the capital of the Kingdom of Lanna from 1296 to 1768. The city is settled 700 km north of Bangkok, among the top mountains in the country. The top mountain in Thailand, Doi Inthanon is not far from the city. It is settled on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river, the main river of Kingdom of Thailand.

There are also some other exciting markets in the city like a handicraft and food store that opens every Sunday afternoon till late on Rachadamnoen Road, twhich is the main street in the historical center of Chiang Mai. At that time the road is complete to cars.
Very exciting is also second hand Thieves store settled at the intersection of Kaeo Nawarat and Ratanakosin Roads, on the eastern side of the River Ping.

But there are also very contemporary shopping malls in Chiang Mai which are the centers of the entertainment of the city. One of them is Central Plaza Chiang Mai Airport which is very contemporary and settled only ten minutes from the city center and near the international airport of Chiang Mai. It is the place famous for shopping, food and entertainment. You can buy there all kinds of products, watch the latest Thai and western movies, some of them also in 3D, and try yummy Thai coffee.
Another contemporary and very popular mall in the city is Kad Suan Kaew Central Mall, settled on Huay Kaew road just 100-200 m from the old city moat.
