Shopping Attractions of Chiang Mai, the City in Thailand

Chiang Mai is a gorgeous city in the North of Thailand and the capital of the Province of the same name. It is the second biggest city in Thailand and it is very popular among expats who live in Thailand. According to many of them this northern city has most of the attractions of Bangkok without the bad sides of the big city like Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

Chiang Mai is also the most culturally significant city in the northern Thailand, famous for its Lanna culture. The city used to be the capital of the Kingdom of Lanna from 1296 to 1768. The city is settled 700 km north of Bangkok, among the top mountains in the country. The top mountain in Thailand, Doi Inthanon is not far from the city. It is settled on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river, the main river of Kingdom of Thailand.

Chiang Mai is the city were the ancient culture is mixed with modernity, because the city has become modernized lately. It is very popular also among tourists and other visitors. Every year about five million people visit the city, and among them between 1.4 million and 2 million are foreign tourists.

Shopping Attractions of Chiang Mai, the City in Thailand

The city has been always very important because of its strategic location on the main trading routes and the Ping River. It has always been famous for its trade and shopping. Nowadays also a lot of the visitors come to Chiang Mai, just for one purpose - shopping. The city is famous for its handicrafts and arts. The most famous place for shopping in the city is the Night Bazaar. The Night Bazaar covers a quite large area that sprawls along the city's footpaths, inside buildings, temple grounds and open areas. It is especially crowded on Saturdays and Sundays.

There are also some other exciting markets in the city like a handicraft and food store that opens every Sunday afternoon till late on Rachadamnoen Road, twhich is the main street in the historical center of Chiang Mai. At that time the road is complete to cars.

Very exciting is also second hand Thieves store settled at the intersection of Kaeo Nawarat and Ratanakosin Roads, on the eastern side of the River Ping.

But there are also very contemporary shopping malls in Chiang Mai which are the centers of the entertainment of the city. One of them is Central Plaza Chiang Mai Airport which is very contemporary and settled only ten minutes from the city center and near the international airport of Chiang Mai. It is the place famous for shopping, food and entertainment. You can buy there all kinds of products, watch the latest Thai and western movies, some of them also in 3D, and try yummy Thai coffee.

Another contemporary and very popular mall in the city is Kad Suan Kaew Central Mall, settled on Huay Kaew road just 100-200 m from the old city moat.

Hospitals in Chiang Mai, Thailand - medical Tourism

Chiang Mai Ram Hospital

This is the prime hidden hospital in Chiang Mai, and with the price range to match: but then again, you get what you pay for, though the Ram is not necessarily where you might want to have your check-up or doctor appointment if you are a backpacker traveling on a diminutive budget. The Ram has whole departments: Obstetrics/Gynecology, neurosurgery, pediatrician, dentistry, and all the specialists you would expect to find at any contemporary hospital. Indeed, Thai doctors tend to come with much great bedside manners and as a rule are friendlier than their western counterparts thanks to the emphasis on hospitality in Thai culture as well as the Ram's direction as part of the service sector. The staff speak fairly fluent English, commonly give prompt, helpful service, and the hospital as a whole is one of the most reputable in the country (overseas patients who come to Thailand for cheaper medical expenses and operations are common). The Chiang Mai Ram is located in the Old City area, near the Central Kad Suan Kaew shopping mall, and boasts a roof that has been built to adapt accident helicopter landing. All reputable hotels in the city often have a compact with the Ram and default to them for ambulances and emergencies.

Rajavej Hospital

Hospitals in Chiang Mai, Thailand - medical Tourism

Located opposite a hotel, the Rajavej Hospital includes highly specialized service clinics, including liver disease clinic, hemorrhoids clinic, digestive system disease, diabetes/thyroid and cholesterol clinic, dermatology, geriatric clinic and a menopause clinic. Their service centers range from cancer to endoscopy, and they have surgeons who specialize in orthopedic surgery, oncology, and plastic surgery. Price range is somewhat less likely to traumatize your wallet, but the Rajavej Hospital's lobby and waiting area is also considerably less glamorous to look at then the Ram's.

McCormick Hospital

The McCormick Hospital is one of the few institutions in Chiang Mai and Thailand in general that are run under the umbrella of the Church of Christ, and as such is a Catholic hospital. Being considerably smaller than the Chiang Mai Ram, it accordingly offers rather fewer facilities and department, but the chamber and nursing fees are also much cheaper, catering to more budget-conscious patients. general health check-ups, cancer check-ups, prenatal and postnatal care, cardiac care unit, and laberious care units are available. The McCormick is located in Wat Ket, on Kaeonawarat Road, close to the Dara Academy.

Lanna Hospital

The Lanna Hospital has been certified with Iso 9000. It offers 180 in-patient beds, and distinguishes itself by hiring staff who not only speak English but also Mandarin and Japanese in addition to, of course, Thai. While like others it offers general care across discrete health categories (cardiac care, back pain, Obstetrics/Gynecology, et cetera), it specializes in handling accident cases. It is located on Chnag Klan Road, in the city center, and is one of the hospitals closest to the Night store area.

All the hospitals listed cleave to Iso standards and are staffed by internationally trained doctors and nurses, many of which graduated from Ivy League schools and top medical universities of England and Switzerland. Incorporate this with the first-rate hospitality, cultural disposition toward friendliness, and the relatively low costs, and Chiang Mai undoubtedly proves one of the most inviting destinations for medical tourism.

"Wat Rong Khun: The White Temple" Kitkatgo's photos around Chiang Rai, Thailand (travel pics) Video Clips. Duration : 1.20 Mins.

Preview of Kitkatgo's blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Chiang Rai, Thailand Entry Title: "Wat Rong Khun: The White Temple" Entry: "Our final stop before arriving at our hotel, was Wat Rong Khun which is a contemporary temple created by renowned Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. It is still under construction and is not being built with help from the government. As of this year (2009) it is in its 12th year of construction, and even though work is yet to be done, it is Chiang Rai's top tourist attraction. It is really beautiful and very intriguing. The mural art inside the ubosot depicts many modern images, like the burning twin towers, a Rolex watch, and even Batman. Chalermchai has said, "Money and possessions are insignificant. They are not mine but are only make-beliefs. Merits belong to me; therefore, money is of no value to me. Money is valuable only as a way to make merit for further journey of the soul.""
