Winter Sports in Barcelona - Ice Skating

Barcelona is more than just a summer-time city. There is much that is fun, educational or cultural (or all 3!) open and accessible throughout the winter months. Definitely falling into the fun category is the Barça Ice Rink de Barcelona. This most seasonable of attractions has seen a presence in the city for over 30 years, and is host to several competitive ice sporting clubs, as well as being open to the general public. The Barça Ice Rink is next to the Camp Nou Stadium.

In Barcelona, you will find also the Skating Club de Barcelona tucked away on the Calle Roger de Flor, in the wide avenues of Eixample. This is only a mile or so from the Old City, and the Plaça de Catalunya. Monday and Tuesdays are half-days, but the ice rink is open for general sessions for the rest of the week, as late as 9pm (excepting the daily siesta closing from 1.30pm until 5pm).

The general sessions are the most popular with families and the ice rink quickly becomes a bobbing, slipping and sliding arena for Barcelonans of all ages. Music, lights and snazzy screens enliven the experience - as if that were really needed! But as well as general skating fun, the ice rink is also host to some serious sporting activity. The local Curling Team practices, and competes here and they have the distinction of being Spanish Group B Champions. It is well worth checking out the competition schedules to see when the next Curling Event is; the ice rink is sure to be packed and the atmosphere electric.

There is also a Hockey School for children, which involves tuition and trial games. For this class, all of the equipment is supplied. The ice rink also puts on some excellent Ice Skating tuition, that would be ideal for the budding Torvill and Deans. And if you do enrol one of your kids into these sessions, you get free skate hire, and free entry to the General Sessions, thrown in as well.

On a more practical note, it's worth pointing out that the Skating Club de Barcelona doesn't allow those under 3 to skate. And you must bring gloves, and, for the youngsters under 12, some form of helmet; health and safety is alive and well even in Catalonia!

So if your stay in relative warmth of the Catalan winter has you nostalgic for some wintry wonder, a trip down to a Skating Club in Barcelona may be in order, for you and your kids.
