Thai tourism hit by instability - 25 Oct 09

Thai tourism hit by instability - 25 Oct 09 Video Clips. Duration : 2.53 Mins.

In what is supposed to be Thailand's peak tourist season, the long tail boats along the Chao Phraya river, in the heart of Bangkok, are mostly empty these days. Tour operators have never seen it so quiet in October, Al Jazeera's Aela Callan reports. Athiraj, a tour operator in Bangkok, said: "The number of tourists has decreased at least 50 per cent. Normally this time of year is the start of the high season and a lot of tourists are coming. But now it feels like we are still in the low season." Around the Grand Palace, one of the Thai capital's main tourist attractions, the city's famous tuk-tuks sit idle, as do many street vendors who are barely scraping together a living selling souvenirs. "This year is the worst. It's actually the worst of the worst," Jintana, a tour-boat operator, said. "Normally I have so many tourists. The number is so enormous I do not have time to eat." The downturn is expected to cost Thailand bn. Most blame the ongoing political upheaval in the country which has left the bn-a-year tourist industry feeling the heat. The political troubles are highly visible. Red-shirted supporters of Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister, regularly hold rallies outside popular tourist attractions, catching many visitors unawares. It was the closure of Bangkok airport this time last year by Thaksins yellow-shirted opponents that has lingered in the minds of many foreign visitors. In most tourist areas of Thailand, locals are hanging their hopes on a ...

Hospitals in Chiang Mai, Thailand - medical Tourism

Chiang Mai Ram Hospital

This is the prime hidden hospital in Chiang Mai, and with the price range to match: but then again, you get what you pay for, though the Ram is not necessarily where you might want to have your check-up or doctor appointment if you are a backpacker traveling on a diminutive budget. The Ram has whole departments: Obstetrics/Gynecology, neurosurgery, pediatrician, dentistry, and all the specialists you would expect to find at any contemporary hospital. Indeed, Thai doctors tend to come with much great bedside manners and as a rule are friendlier than their western counterparts thanks to the emphasis on hospitality in Thai culture as well as the Ram's direction as part of the service sector. The staff speak fairly fluent English, commonly give prompt, helpful service, and the hospital as a whole is one of the most reputable in the country (overseas patients who come to Thailand for cheaper medical expenses and operations are common). The Chiang Mai Ram is located in the Old City area, near the Central Kad Suan Kaew shopping mall, and boasts a roof that has been built to adapt accident helicopter landing. All reputable hotels in the city often have a compact with the Ram and default to them for ambulances and emergencies.

Rajavej Hospital

Hospitals in Chiang Mai, Thailand - medical Tourism

Located opposite a hotel, the Rajavej Hospital includes highly specialized service clinics, including liver disease clinic, hemorrhoids clinic, digestive system disease, diabetes/thyroid and cholesterol clinic, dermatology, geriatric clinic and a menopause clinic. Their service centers range from cancer to endoscopy, and they have surgeons who specialize in orthopedic surgery, oncology, and plastic surgery. Price range is somewhat less likely to traumatize your wallet, but the Rajavej Hospital's lobby and waiting area is also considerably less glamorous to look at then the Ram's.

McCormick Hospital

The McCormick Hospital is one of the few institutions in Chiang Mai and Thailand in general that are run under the umbrella of the Church of Christ, and as such is a Catholic hospital. Being considerably smaller than the Chiang Mai Ram, it accordingly offers rather fewer facilities and department, but the chamber and nursing fees are also much cheaper, catering to more budget-conscious patients. general health check-ups, cancer check-ups, prenatal and postnatal care, cardiac care unit, and laberious care units are available. The McCormick is located in Wat Ket, on Kaeonawarat Road, close to the Dara Academy.

Lanna Hospital

The Lanna Hospital has been certified with Iso 9000. It offers 180 in-patient beds, and distinguishes itself by hiring staff who not only speak English but also Mandarin and Japanese in addition to, of course, Thai. While like others it offers general care across discrete health categories (cardiac care, back pain, Obstetrics/Gynecology, et cetera), it specializes in handling accident cases. It is located on Chnag Klan Road, in the city center, and is one of the hospitals closest to the Night store area.

All the hospitals listed cleave to Iso standards and are staffed by internationally trained doctors and nurses, many of which graduated from Ivy League schools and top medical universities of England and Switzerland. Incorporate this with the first-rate hospitality, cultural disposition toward friendliness, and the relatively low costs, and Chiang Mai undoubtedly proves one of the most inviting destinations for medical tourism.

Hawaii Tourism Continues to Go Down

Tourism to the Hawaii Islands has suffered tremendously. Over the course of the last year the Islands have seen a decrease in tourism from the same month the previous year of roughly 20% to now even 35%. As businesses in the Islands fight to stay open, they each find a different challenge.

Hotels

Hotel Koh Samui

Businesses associated with hotels have suffered the most. With hotel occupancy down the greatest of all accommodations, employees as well as vendors are equally suffering. Unemployment from the hotels has skyrocketed and a lot of small businesses have lost their largest clients. The Waikoloa Beach Resort has attempted to be proactive in hosting concerts quarterly to try to boost traffic into the resorts. This has been beneficial to all the businesses within the resort, but it only lasts 2-3 days.

Vacation Rentals

Hotel Koh Samui

Vacation Rentals have not seem to suffer as much as hotels from an occupancy perspective. While occupancy has averaged only going down 10%, the rates have reduced by almost 25%. High end vacation rentals such as Kolea in the Waikoloa Beach Resort, have seem to be a very nice alternative to vacationers who typically stay in the hotels. Vacation Rentals offer a cost effective alternative to hotels for vacationers that go to the Islands annually.

Hawaii Activities

Activity vendors have suffered greatly. Most vacationers are barely getting by to afford their accommodations and airfare and are not willing to spend that extra money on activities. While the Hawaii Islands offer an array of things to see and do, most people are passing on them in attempt to save money. HawaiiVacationStop.com has seen a drop in sales of 34% over the course of the last year. The vendors seem to be cutting out the middleman in attempt to stay in business.

With all of this in mind, Hawaii is still the top vacation destination in the US and some even feel in the world. Once the economy rebounds, you are sure to see a drastic boost in tourism to the Hawaiian Islands.
